Dr. Manal Awad Mikhail, Minister of Local Development

 

Leadership positions:

 • Served as:

A Governor of Damietta governorate from September 2018 to July 2024.

 A Deputy Governor of Giza for Community Affairs and Environmental Development from February 2015 to  August 2018, and took over several files, including :

Academic Qualifications :

• Bachelor of Veterinary Medical Sciences, Banha University, 1989.

• Master of Veterinary Medical Sciences, Alexandria University, 1995.

• PhD in Veterinary Medical Sciences, Alexandria University, 1999.

 

Scientific awards obtained:

• Winner of the State Incentive Award in Agricultural Sciences in 2007 for five scientific researches.

• Recipient of the UNESCO Learning Cities Prize in 2017 among the top 16 cities in the world.

 

Scientific and practical achievements:

- A membership of the Learning Cities Program of UNESCO in 2016, made Giza governorate the first city in the Arab Republic of Egypt to obtain this membership.

- Contribute to developing slums in Giza Governorate by implementing many housing projects to develop slums.

- Attracting many investments and grants from international bodies such as (the European Union( UN), French Development Agency (AFD), German Development Agency( GIZ), and The World Bank) to serve the citizens of Giza.

- Signing and activating many protocols and agreements with ministries, universities, and various bodies such as (Ministry of Communications - Ministry of Solidarity - Addiction Fund (Prime Minister's Council) - Cairo University).

- Preparing the climate adaptation strategy in Giza Governorate.

- Implementation of the first "SafeCity" free from violence against women and girls in Giza Governorate in partnership between the National Council for Women and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women "UN Woman"

  Dr. Manal Awad was selected among the top 50 influential women for the year 2018 through the "Fifty Forum" for her successful contributions to the field of local economic development in January 2019, according to the report prepared by the forum in partnership with the specialized economic magazine "Amwal Al-Ghad", based on several professional standards compatible with the classification centers approved for selection.

• Dr. Manal Awad was selected among the most prominent inspiring women figures in the Arab world through the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat)

• Winning the shield of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology for Damietta Governorate to obtain the best indicators in international cooperation in 2019.

Winning the Government Excellence Award for the city of Ras El Bar in 2019.

• Damietta Governorate won 4 prizes in the second part of the Government Excellence Award for the city of Ras al-Bar, the local unit of Al Shoaraa village, the Social Rehabilitation Office in Kafr Saad and the Social Rehabilitation Office in  Al Zarqa.

The city of Damietta obtained the membership of the International Network of Learning Cities of UNESCO in June 2019.

Damietta Governorate received the UNESCO Prize for Learning Cities for the year 2021, among ten cities in the world selected by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning based on the recommendation of an independent jury that includes international experts. 

• Honoring Damietta Governorate for obtaining second place in the axis of the best studies to support a decision.

• Damietta Governorate won 3 awards in the Government Excellence Competition for the year 2023 for institutional excellence (Ras El Bar - Damietta - Public Relations in Ras El Bar).

Damietta Governorate won the first prizes for the year 2023 in the sub-index of innovative services for citizens and investors and the sub-index of green innovation in the Capital of Egypt Award for the year 2022.

 The Governor of Damietta was among the most inspiring women figures in the Arab world through dialogue launched by the United Nations Human Settlements Program under the slogan "Women in Leadership".

Honoring the Governor of Damietta among the top 10 distinguished women in achieving the strategy of "Building a stronger Egypt" during the ceremony held by the embassies of Sweden and Canada.

Membership of the General Assembly of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership Committee (COPPEM).

The most important participation in local and international conferences:

- Active participation in many scientific conferences within Egypt with many scientific researches.

- Participation in a study tour on climate change adaptation in Germany during the period from 7 to 11 June 2015 under the title (German perspective towards adaptation to climate change in urban cities).

- Participation in the Climate Change Conference in Marrakech, Kingdom of Morocco during the period from 6 to 11 November 2016 entitled (Conference of the Parties MED-COP).

- Participation in the "El Alamein Leaders for Safe Cities and Public Spaces" forum under the title (Work Approaches for Women and Girls, Safety, Empowerment, Sustainable Cities), which was held in Mexico during the period from February 22 to February 25, 2017.

- Participation in the third conference of learning cities, which was held in Cork, Ireland, from 18 to 20 September 2017, to receive the award that was obtained by Giza Governorate among 16 winning cities in the world as the best learning city.

- Participation in the Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany, from 6 to 11 November 2017

- Participation in the fourth forum of the "Safe Cities Free from Violence against Women and Girls" program in Canada from 16 to 19 October 2018, to disseminate the model of "Safe City Free from Violence against Women and Girls" and empower them socially, economically, and politically.

- Participation within the Egyptian delegation in the meeting of the heads of delegations of the North African region of the United Organization and African local governments in Marrakech, Morocco, in November 2018.

 

- Participation in the activities of the First Arab Forum for Urban Development in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E., which came under the title "Towards Sustainable Arab Cities for a brighter future" in March 2019.

- Participation in the dialogue sessions of the symposium held in Bali, Indonesia during the period from 20 to 24 August 2019: to discuss ways of cooperation between the Republic of Indonesia and the countries of the African continent in the fields of infrastructure.

-Participation in the Fourth World Conference on Innovative Cities "Smart Cities for the Middle East" and in North Africa on 14/10/2024

Participation in the "Bridge Building Summit 2023" within the 84th session of the Committee on Urban Development, Housing and Land Management (CUDHLM), which was launched by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Center for World Cities in Geneva, Switzerland in October 2023.

- Participation in the UNESCO Lifelong Learning Festival "Lifelong Learning and its Importance towards Promoting Visions of Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship", which was held in Shanghai, China, and organized by the UNESCO Network of Lifelong Learning Cities in cooperation with East China Normal University in October 2023.

- Holds the training program for decision-makers in governorates and neighborhoods by the German Development Agency GIZ. .
